The Daily Pill is a series of very short daily posts where I share the definition of a medical term I think we should all know. Read it every morning and build up your medical vocabulary.
I figured that if we are going to talk about inflammation, the immune system is the best place to start.
When its all said and done. The immune system has two main functions:
It is like the military force of your body: defending you from pathogens
It is also like the clean up crew: clearing up debris from dead cells after they die either as part of their natural cycle or after an injury to your tissues.
Learning about the immune system is important because all that redness and pain you feel after an injury, and the fever and swelling you get when you get sick, and the soreness after an intense work out, is the result of the immune system doing its thing. We just call it inflammation.
The problem is that when it goes unchecked, inflammation can contribute to chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.
