The Daily Pill is a series of very short daily posts where I share the definition of a medical term I think we should all know. Read it every morning and build up your medical vocabulary.
😮💨VO2 Max:
VO2 Max measures how quickly and effectively you can take up oxygen from the air into your lungs, diffuse it into you bloodstream, pump it to your muscles, and utilize it for energy to move and do everything else. It basically reflects how much oxygen per unit of time your body is able to process. If you want to improve your VO2 Max, you need to improve your cardiorespiratory system by focusing on HIIT.
🤔Why you need to know:
If you are an athlete or a competitor and you see your own body as a performance vehicle - which it is, VO2 Max would represent the size of your engine. More importantly, VO2 Max is the greatest predictor of lifespan.
🧠Trivia:
The person traditionally cited as having the highest recorded VO2 max is Norwegian cross-country skier Bjørn Dæhlie. He registered an astonishing VO2 max of 96 ml/kg/min, which is nearly double the average for young adults.
